New in Focus: Intelligent Protection and Control Solutions for Railway Infrastructure

Whether raising and lowering pantographs or switching main power circuits in overhead line systems, reliable protection and control components are essential for safe railway operations. Proven relay solutions for the precise control of pneumatic actuators and the rapid monitoring of operating currents now provide new opportunities to further enhance availability, diagnostic capabilities, and operational safety in railway vehicles and infrastructure applications.

A typical application is the control of pneumatically operated vacuum main circuit breakers used in overhead line and pantograph systems. In these applications, the CIM1R time-delay relay provides precise timing control of the pneumatic actuator. After energization, the actuator is pressurized in a controlled manner and subsequently vented after a predefined delay. This supports repeatable switching sequences, high operational accuracy, and extended service life of the installation.

Equally important is the reliable detection of electrical faults. In combination with current transformers, the MRS13R overcurrent protection relay continuously monitors operating currents and protects equipment against overload and short-circuit events. With a response time of less than 20 ms, faults can be detected at an early stage and affected sections of the system can be disconnected quickly.

Additional Features of the MRS13R

  • AC/DC power supply: 12-48 V

  • Simple parameter setting via three buttons and an integrated display

  • LED status indicators for rapid system overview

  • Integrated diagnostic input for functional testing without actual overcurrent conditions

  • Non-volatile storage of all settings in the event of power loss

  • Compact 35 mm housing and DIN rail mounting in accordance with IEC EN 60715

A particularly noteworthy feature is the use of forcibly guided contacts in accordance with IEC 61810-3. These ensure clearly defined and reliably detectable switching states, even under fault conditions. This enables precise feedback to higher-level control systems, simplifies diagnostics, and increases overall system availability.

The combination of intelligent timing control and rapid current monitoring demonstrates how modern relay technology supports the ongoing development of railway vehicles and railway infrastructure. The result is a robust, low-maintenance solution for applications where safety, reliability, and long-term availability are of the highest importance.
